Are you looking for inspiration on what to write on your blog? If you are like most people who write and maintain a blog, you might often ask yourself, “What should I write about today?” Let’s talk about聽Blog Post Inspiration and what you can do about it!
I am currently in the middle of the Ultimate Blog Challenge where I am writing and posting every day during the month of October.聽My goal after the challenge will聽be to post at least once a week, if not more!
Why post more frequently? For one thing, it makes Google happier! And a happy Google means better rankings. Better rankings means more traffic! More traffic means Paul is happy 馃檪
Also, I have noticed that my Alexa ranking has dropped. The last time I checked,聽 Digital Maestro.com was ranked around #1,145,023 – today it is at 1,367,058! Wow! Time to get back in the grove, not only for ranking purposes but also to get information out to folks.
But now I am back! Back with a great tip on where to get your blog post inspiration!
Blog Post Inspiration
When I sat down to write today’s post, it was going to be something very different than this post here (the blog post originally thought for today will be posted tomorrow). When I sat down and thought about what I would write about, I had a great idea. That idea was, “Let me check my draft posts and see what is there!” You can do this – you can use your drafts as your inspiration!
I typically store ideas, partial posts, and future posts as drafts. This way they are all in one place.聽 Currently my Draft Posts are at an all time high – 61 posts! I do not think I have ever had this many. Some may have already been published as different posts, some may no longer be relevant, and some could contain nuggets of gold waiting to be published!
I have already deleted the oldest one since it was actually a test post for a client and no longer needed!
The fact that a post is a draft means there was some relevance at one point in time. Maybe it can be used today! Maybe it will spawn another good topic! Maybe there is a post that is completely written and all I have to do is press Publish (not likely… but wishful thinking!)
The next time you are stumped on what to write about and needs some blog post inspiration, check out your drafts – you may find something worth while that was never published, or at the least, you can do some “Spring Cleaning!”
Leave a comment and let me know where you get your thoughts on what to write about.
Martha says
I do that and I also have a notebook that I write down interesting topics, things I’ve done or gone and work highlights. When I’m stumped, I go to my notebook!
Paul says
Great method, Martha!
Jill says
Good idea checking the drafts. I currently have 54. I have gone back and used them at times and was definitely glad they were there. Good advice.
Paul says
Some may be good and usable, while others may end up in the trash! You never know until you look!
Judy Mick says
I generally get my blogging ideas when I’m on a run. The hard part is usually remembering when I’m done! 馃榾
Paul says
Do you carry your smartphone with you, Judy? Why not dictate a quick memo via the voice recorder, or get an app to record things.
Nona says
Well that’s a clever idea!
I jot post ideas on random scraps of paper or in notebooks. Most are never looked at again. This way they would already be where my blogging happens, just waiting to be used.
Paul says
If I tried to do that, Nona, I would have paper all over the place!
KemKem says
I am often stumped. Good idea about checking the drafts. I only have three currently, but that will do got now.馃榾
Paul says
The maybe 3 more ideas that you didn’t think of before checking!
Dace says
That’s how I blog. I start writing about something and either post it (rarely) or save a draft and then come back at a later date to finish.
Paul says
Great Minds think alike! Thanks, Dace!
Sherry Sapienza says
I agree with everyone…that’s the way to go. I also have a notebook full of ideas for posts and partially written posts. I am constantly going back and using many of the ideas for a series or a current trend. Thanks!
Paul says
That’s a great way to track them, Sherry!
Amy L. Bovaird says
Hi Paul,
Great idea! I think I will also look through published posts and see if I can get a different slant on some of the better ones!
Thanks!
Amy
Paul says
That is also a great idea, Amy! If you can revisit some old posts and ‘bring them up to date’ that is also a great strategy!
Elisa says
I have a lot of draft posts that I know will eventually get published. And I love that there are posts waiting for me to complete.
Paul says
That is awesome, Elisa! Just remember to go back and review them!
Barbara Radisavljevic says
I feel guilty every time I see all those drafts in my folder, but I am always more excited about some new idea and just never get around to the old drafts.
Paul says
At least you know they are in there, Barbara! If you get stuck and cannot think of what to write about, that is a good time to pick one of the drafts, finish it off, and hit Publish!
Glenda Cates says
I have a notebook as well as Drafts waiting to be published and I am going to use them next year. As I have a spreadsheet of what is in there and it is Homeschooling ideals so I can grow that Niche. Although I have notebooks as well including one in the car because a mom with a kid and pets can find inspiration anywhere including a convenience store.
Paul says
I agree! Inspiration hits anytime… and anywhere!
