The latest version of WordPress was released – version 3.8.2 has gone Live! If you have not yet done so, now is the time to backup your site and upgrade!
The good folks over at WordPress.org even state, “This is an important security release for all previous versions and we strongly encourage you to update your sites immediately. This releases fixes a weakness that could let an attacker force their way into your site by forging authentication cookies. ”
If you have automatic background updates enabled then your site has probably already have been updated. Personally, I like to update my sites (and my clients’ sites) myself. By being more in control, I can ensure I have a backup made just before the update is applied. Although i have not heard too much on issues with the upgrade, I did read one case where the upgrade broke someone’s site.
By the way, this release also fixes nine bugs and contains three other security hardening changes:
- Pass along additional information when processing pingbacks to help hosts identify potentially abusive requests.
- Fix a low-impact SQL injection by trusted users.
- Prevent possible cross-domain scripting through Plupload, the third-party library WordPress uses for uploading files.
Do you update your site manually for these minor releases, or do you rely on the auto-update feature to take care of it for you? Leave a comment and let me know!
