When you’re blogging only for fun, there’s no need for a strategy. But if you’re planning to get your blog someplace else – reach as many people as possible and generate a good amount of money – then you need to start being strategic! Since blogs depend mainly on quality content to draw the readers’ attention and keep them engaged (and, ultimately, buying your services!) then it’s really important to strategize in creating your content.
What’s a content strategy?
A strategic plan on how you are going to use content to market and grow your blog is called a content strategy. This is made up of (a) the content that you post to your blog (what you write about, how often you post, how far you plan in advance in creating the content) and (b) the content you use for promoting your blog (for example, emails to your mailing list and social media posts). You’ll eventually have a strategy for making content for paid products.
What type of content should we put in too?
Text and articles aren’t the only things that make up for a good content. It can include images, videos, puzzles and many other things that make for an interesting blog.
Why is this content strategy important?
Try conducting a survey on a group of professional bloggers when it comes to planning their content and you’ll probably find that they all work differently. A few may not plan at all, but for most, planning is vital in creating quality content. There are many reasons as to why.
Firstly, when you have a plan, it means you have a strategic approach in whatever you are doing. Instead of randomly publishing a topic that you feel in the mood to create, you can strategically plan for topics that are based on, the time of the year, product promotions etc. Planning ahead also helps make sure you post every now and then, on a consistent schedule, which is essential for keeping readers interested (especially if you’re still in the growing stage).
And also, having a strategy helps to be prepared for those times when life is unpredictable. Maybe you wanted to stick to your schedule but all of a sudden you get sick. Planning and having created content in advance, means that things won’t go totally off track.
What do you need to do after the strategy has been created?
You have to bear in mind that content strategy isn’t set in stone. You can improve it anytime or if you think that you need to edit to make it work better. There might be a case after a month or two that there isn’t much interest in the puzzle or the videos you’re posting. You can always take them out or you can try other ways of promoting or scheduling out your posts that might attract more attention or keep people on your blog for longer.

I appreciate the point about different kinds of videos! I was looking for something else when I found the perfect video for a blog post I that is already live on my website. But I still went back to add it, for anyone who comes along in the future.

When you publish a blog post, it will be there a LONG time… So preparing for the future is always a good thing!

When you have more than one site, you really have to have a plan!

My strategy has always been consistent. (I’m not saying others can discern it- which also works in my favor, I believe.)
I’m with you 100%- even if your blog is for fun, you need a strategy to guide your posts and your accompanying social media to render it fun- for you AND your readers.
One of my defining tweets (back when 140 was all there was…)
Tough to show how much I know and do- so I write my blog to prove it to you.

Ahhh… The poetic side of you, Roy!

Truer words have not been spoken. When l came out of the hobby mindset, I had to start focusing on a strategy. Still a work in progress.
Paul says
I think it is ALWAYS a work in progress! Thanks, Kemkem.
