Fresh content on your blog is an important part of making sure people stay interested. Who needs old and repeating content? People easily lose interest or even stop subscribing to your blog if you haven’t posted anything for awhile. On the other hand, posting too often can also pose a problem, that’s why it is important to get the right balance for your blog. Below we’ll help you equate how frequent you should post on your blog.
Not posting too much
Not posting too much also poses a threat on your blog. If they have already read everything they’re interested in and you don’t have new content for them to read then there’s a tendency that they will unfollow your blog. They don’t know whether you’re taking a break, on vacation or you’ve given up the blog altogether. They may even forget who you are by the time you start posting again and that’s pretty scary.
Another problem with not posing enough new content on your blog is that it’s difficult to rank higher in the search engines. This means that if you’re trying to make money from your blog, you will find it very difficult to do so. This is more of a problem for newer bloggers trying to establish themselves. Still not knowing a lot how ranking on search engines work.
Posting too much
Posting too frequently also poses a threat on your blog. One point is that your followers will not find any value in subscribing to your blog since there’s too much for your followers to read, they will tend to not follow anything at all. That is why it’s much better to post in moderation but you need to make sure that your posts have strong and engaging content that will satisfy your followers.
You might think it’s great to keep posting lots of content to your blog, but people may find it overwhelming if you post too much. This is particularly true if there is the option to subscribe to email alerts, which means they will get an email every time you post something new. Posting too much is also tiring for you, and you may find that quality suffers as a result.
So how much should you post?
The frequency at which you post does depend on your niche, to a large degree. For example, if it鈥檚 news-based then it makes sense to publish several times a day. However, for most, around 1-2 times per week is usually a sweet spot. The posts shouldn’t be short and insignificant and should contain information that provides some form of value for your readers. And remember, this doesn鈥檛 always mean text. It could also mean video, or predominantly image-based posts if that works best for your niche.

I like the idea of switching things up with an image-based post occasionally. My goal is the create one post a week simply because that is all that I can manage (it’s all about me, you see 馃槈
Paul says
As it should be…. All about you, Rachel!
Daniela Pesconi-Arthur says
Hi Paul,
Great point here! I’ve always struggled in the past with how many times/week or month I should post a new article to my blog. I think that this year what I need is to be consistent, no matter how many times I post.
Can I ask you something? The other day, when I left my first comment to one of your posts, it led me to a “thank you for posting” page. I LOVED it! How can I do that? 馃檪
Dani

The Thank You for posting your first message happens by magic, Dani!

I post every business day. (Yes, I’m Jewish. So, some business days for you are not those for me.) But, I really want to post 86,400 times a day. That would ruin the entire premise of the blog. And, thankfully, for my readers, reason does prevail.
Paul says
You are like a machine when it comes to writing, Roy! Keep it up!
Elynn Price says
I wondered about this while participating in the blog challenge. Is one a day to much? I think it is but not yet. I like the idea of 1 to 2 a week but I need to increase the traffic to my blog. Any thoughts?
Paul says
The Ultimate Blog Challenge is designed to help achieve several aspects of your website, traffic, writing skills, relationships, etc. Normally, I do not post daily.
Kemkem says
I have been guilty of not posting enough on my blog. I started off with once a week and somehow lost interest. I have become reenergized lately and hope to do better with the challenge. I think 1-2 times a week will be my aim.
Paul says
Do what you can. Here is something to think about, Kemkem – If you lose interest in your site, you can be others will lose interest as well. What can you do to get it more interesting?
Jeanine Byers says
Wow! That is awesome. I have often felt like the best thing is to post every day so when I don’t, I am falling short. This post is GOOD news!! 馃檪
Paul says
It is all about your audience expectations! There is no golden rule – whatever ends up working for you, Jeanine, that is it!
Alana says
This is food for a lot of future thought. I blog daily and have for several years and I have personal reasons for that. But I am also quite aware that it may be overwhelming to those who follow my blog.
Paul says
As long as your audience knows what to expect, it should be good!
Janet Yarwood says
This is really helpful. At the moment I’m concentrating on posting less overall but posting more consistently
Paul says
Yes – the key is consistency!

Great article, this is something I often struggle with.
Paul says
I hope it helped.
Lily Leung says
Much food for thought. I find it easier to write if I do it every day. However, I do have trouble being lengthy though I am trying to increase my word count. But I probably won’t worry too much about it since I, myself don’t like reading lengthy posts. I have concentration problems. I’ll focus on content first.
Thanks for things to consider.
Lily
Paul says
Many people will say your posts should be only as long as it takes to get the message across. So if you can be brief, it does not need to be long at all.
Martha says
Well.then I’m right on track. I try to post 1-2 weekly except when doing the monthly challenges. I thought I should be posting more on the off months but I usually don’t have time. Glad I’m safe.
Paul says
It all depends on the expectations you set for your readers. You are ALWAYS safe, Martha!
David Hunte says
Thanks for sharing this – You are right, Consistency is the key
Paul says
Consistency IS the key! Thanks, David.

Paul says

Stella Scott says
If you can get something worthy out of a short post, then go for it! I do what I can to stay between 300-500 words.
Seth Godin is the master! We can’t all be like him, but reaching for the stars might be your thing! 馃檪
Paul says
Exactly! Experts all disagree on what the length of a blog post should be – so if 300-500 words works for you – go for it!
