Free Cloud Storage

Although this is a little off topic from my average WordPress posts, I have use a tool that is very useful (and FREE!) that I wanted to share with you. This tool is DropBox

In today’s world we are all over the place. using Dropbox, I can access file from anywhere I can get to the internet. I use many different computers – using DropBox I can put something in ‘The Cloud’ and access it from any of those computers! Some other things I like about it are the following:

1. You can get a 2 gig account for free!

2. I can access it anywhere.

3. It is not just web based! I get a folder created on my computer that I just drop things in and it is now available for me anywhere. One thing to be aware of – when you drag and drop something from your computer to the DropBox folder, it is a MOVE (not a copy). It will no longer be on, say your desktop, but in that folder on your computer.

4. This is a cool feature I really like… You can authorize other DropBox users to use a specific folder; now you can both share documents. I was able to send a folder of 1 gig of pictures to a friend and he got them almost instantly! He can then look at them, and even make some changes (i.e., touch-up work) and then I can get them back! No need to go back and forth with email and wonder who has the most recent version!

It is really cool! You can check it our here: DropBox.com – they have a nice short video you can watch to get an idea of what they do.

By the way – This link is a referral link. The account you create is free. If you use this link, I get an extra 1/2 gig of space, and so do you. This is not shared space – we each get it. And using my link does not share your stuff with me.

When you get an account, you can also refer people to get more free space.

I hope you can find a use for this. Again, use my link and we both get extra space. You can also go directly to their home page and sign up at dropbox dot com. I will not be offended if you don’t want the extra space.

Be Well.
Paul.

Sounds like a great tool Paul. I guess this means I have something else to try to figure out 🙂

It it is not that bad, Julia! And since it is free (there is a paid option for more storage – I have not needed that) you can certainly take your time learning and getting used to it!

For example, I started out just for personal use. Later, I started to use it as a tool to collaborate by sharing specific folders with other people. Just approach it one step at a time!

      Be Well.

Hi Paul – this is a great tool: we have been using it for several months and have almost been completely liberated from USB memory sticks. 2GB holds heaps of data and with a few bonus .25 GB the storage is very useful.
    Regards

Great, Eric! Actually, I just found out that DropBox is adding an additional 1/2 gb of storage! Check to see how much space you have! It might be a little more than you think! (I just went and updated the post to reflect the additional space!)
