Every internet marketing expert agrees that today, blogs are one of the most popular methods of driving traffic and generating income online.
However, not everyone is able to set up a blog that generates an income for them right from the beginning. And although there are a lot of people that say this is possible, there is usually a catch to what they are saying. Be careful. Be warned. And be afraid of these claims. Very rarely is there a get quick scheme that works.
Before you even contemplate setting up a WordPress blog, you need to consider two things:
1. Is the niche you will be focusing on your blog going to be profitable enough?
Unless you like writing and you want to spend your time on that, there is no point in setting up a WordPress blog that won鈥檛 prove to be lucrative enough. You definitely want to start writing about something that is both profitable and interesting for you and for your readers. You cannot make yourself write and produce quality material unless you are intrigued by the topic. Keep in mind that your blog is a very useful and powerful tool, especially when utilized properly. The best idea is to consider how you are going to handle the whole package, meaning the niche and the blog.
2. How many sites are you working on concurrently?
You need to create one blog and make the most out of it because this will bring you some money and will also give you the necessary experience. This will prove useful for your blogging career in general. Choose the topic that interests you the most, concerning a sport, a hobby, an interest, or even yourself and your personal life, and dive into the WordPress world.
There are many ways to generate more traffic to your blog, but before doing so you need to make sure that your content is gripping and intriguing enough, otherwise, you won鈥檛 be able to attract many people. Traffic is one part of the money making process, but you need to make sure that there are a few more elements as well.
One method you can use is to add the Google AdSense application to your blog. It is one of the most common money making methods available and it is relatively easy to implement.
Google places ads that are relevant to the blog. Once someone clicks on them you will earn a percentage of the Google earnings. In any case, once you integrate AdSense into your blog, you will start earning money as a passive income as long as people are visiting your site and then click on your links. Let me say this.. while this strategy works, it is not as popular as it was in the past. Your visitors are much savvie than they were in the past. However, AdSense can generate some income if you have enough traffic and enough people clicking the ads.
If you are running an e-commerce website, you can drive visitors to your business through your blog and convert more visitors to customers. More visitors means more business. More business means more money. Furthermore, you can directly sell advertising to merchants and vendors. If you blog about traveling and tourism, you can contact vendors related to tourism and invite them to post ads or small banners to your blog. When negotiating with merchants you can decide either on a monthly rate or on a pay per click advertising method. Make sure though that the blog doesn鈥檛 become visually painful and hard to read because of too many ads flashing all over. There are many nice and easy to navigate through templates available. So try to use the one that is the most user-friendly for you.
Always remember that you need to blog regularly, keep your content unique and interesting, and, your WordPress blog clean of clutter. No one likes a cluttered looking website!

I know lots of people rush into this decision to monetize but l am taking it slow and steady because my goal is long term.
Paul says
That is a good strategy, KemKem. You can always start now 馃檪
Jeanine Byers says
Like KemKem, I am thinking long-term, too. But also, what I am hoping to sell is me (meaning my books, my services, etc.) It would be interesting to hear your advice about blogging when what you are selling is yourself, and you are not looking for others to advertise on your blog.
Paul says
98% of the time, I am selling myself and my services! I think I will write a post on this! Thanks for the suggestions, Jeanine!
Roy A Ackerman, PhD, EA says
I have to hope that my blog content convinces folks to hire us. By demonstrating the breadth and depth of our expertise, the hope is we can alleviate their objections to “maybe they aren’t for us”. (Of course, we try to ensure all our clients become our friends. Not best friends, but folks with whom we’d share a dinner or a bottle of wine. That means our communication lines are clear and we can each ensure that our efforts on their behalf can help them achieve their goals.)
Paul says
Blogging helps develop a relationship with clients and potential clients! I concur, Roy!

Sigh…I just saw a headline the other day to the effect of “stop blogging, it doesn’t sell books.” Sometimes I think they are right, other times I figure at least someone is seeing my writing and “might” buy a book one of these days if I keep at it.
Paul says
Blogging does not sell books – that is correct! However, blogging DOES help get traffic. Blogging DOES help build relationships. Blogging DOES help build your expert status and helps your exposure.
Blogging *is* good for your book business!
Di says
Interesting. I have Adsense on one, and get a payment every year or so. I do it more for fun.
Paul says
I hope it is enough to have a nice dinner out!
There are ways to have multiple sites and an AdSense strategy to get traffic to the sites.

So much to learn! I’ve had some success, always room to grow and improve! Thanks Paul!

You are welcome, Anne!
