A friend of mine (I’ll call her ‘Betsy Baker’ since that is her name) has a great site over at The DIY Entrepreneur. She recently wrote about some of the rules that Facebook is changing… and it ain’t too pretty!
Specifically, Betsy was discussing Facebook Fan pages – the ‘business’ side of FB as opposed to the ‘personal’ site that most people have. The game is to see how many fans you can get. And usually, fans are obtained through advertising. This is the code word for BUYING your fans.
With the new algorithm (another new algorithm) in place, your fans all do not get to see the content on your Fan Page. If you want to do that, you can boost the post (another code word for Pay More Money). As Betsy describes it:
Because now not only does Facebook expect you to buy fans, they expect you to pay further for your purchased fans to even see your posts.
You read that right: you pay to advertise on Facebook to get more fans and then you pay again to promote your posts so that the fans you paid for will see your post.
Even a Facebook spokesperson admitted, “the best way to get your stuff seen if you’re a business is to pay for it.”
Awesome for Facebook, right? But not so great for you.
This might get you rethinking about your Facebook strategy… It has for me. If you keep paying and paying, you might end up in a shack in the woods without any money left.
