There are times when you might not want the search engines, i.e., Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc., from indexing our site. This may be because you are not ready to go live with your website, or you want to have more content created before letting the world know you exist. Using WordPress this is actually easy to do!
From your Dashboard, click on the Setting Link and then on the Privacy link.
There are only 2 choices on this page:
- I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors
The settings on this screen drive WordPress’ virtual robots.txt file. Unless you want to keep your blog private you should select the top option: ‘Make your blog visible to everyone…’.
Selecting the bottom option will block the search engines so you won’t be found by anyone unless they have the exact link to your blog
